Toshiba Continues to Support the Langa Education Assistance Program

Leap School Students

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have continued to work with one of our most important CSR partners, the Langa Education Assistance Program (LEAP), to support safe operation and distance learning at LEAP Science and Math school 3 (LEAP-3) in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

LEAP runs independent schools that provide fee-free education for some of South Africa’s most marginalized communities. It’s a good fit for Toshiba, a strong proponent of science and math education, and Toshiba Africa has worked with LEAP-3 since 2017.

While the pandemic has hit hard everywhere, it has made itself particularly felt in the poorer districts. Under the strict lockdown introduced in March, LEAP schools started distance learning via mobile messaging system and online meeting apps. However, many households and families that have no income had trouble accessing devices and data bundles. Now, as the lockdown eases, LEAP-3 faces the new challenge of ensuring the safety of students and teachers at school facilities.

Toshiba is donating R77 080 to LEAP-3. That money will help the school to carry out professional deep cleaning of premises ahead of reopening, and to make sure they have the personal protective equipment and sanitizers essential for everyday use. It will also go toward providing mobile phones and data bundles for junior grades students who continue to study at home.
